    Basic Components of RV Solar Systems

    You may need some technological savvy to install your solar panel. We’ll list the basic components to give you an idea what you need to get to install your trailer solar panels yourself:

    • Solar panels: The panels convert the energy in the sun’s rays into electrical energy. (Please view information about different types elsewhere in this article).
    • Controller: The charge controller connects the panels to your power storage unit such as a battery. This device manages the charge so there’s no overcharging. This protects your battery from damage or drainage as it can shut down the system if the power level drops below a certain capacity. Thanks to newer technology a modern controller called a MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) can optimize power generation by converting the solar energy into the best voltage, based on your specific batteries.
    • Inverter: If the appliances you use during RV solar camping require AC power and inverter will turn the DC power into the right format (AC power).
    • The storage unit (Battery): You need this to store the power your panels generate during the day. You can use lead acid or Lithium-ion batteries.

    • This electricity can be contained in batteries (storage units) but need to travel through a converter to ensure a steady charge as fluctuations will damage the battery.

    That seems simple enough, but here’s what most people struggle with: How big should your RV solar setup be?

    How Much Solar Power Do You Need?

    This becomes an easy equation if you know what to look for. Here are easy steps:

      • To run your 60W laptop for two hours, will require 120 Watts-hours/day

      • A 1000W microwave that’s only used for a few minutes each day (+/- ? hour) will add 500Watts-hours/day
    • Add up all your totals to have a rough estimate of your requirements. This is the Watts you’ll need every day you’re out camping and this is what you need your RV solar setup to generate.

    The next step is to put together enough solar panels that will provide you with that amount of power. Here’s what you need to know:

    • Find a solar panel you want to buy and look at the Wattage rating. Depending on the design and size it can be a 100W unit, a 400W unit etc.
    • Think of where you’ll be camping and how many hours of sunlight you’ll have on average. Remember, clouds and other factors will affect how effective your panels absorb energy. In general, you can bet on having five hours of sunlight.
    • Multiply the hours with the Wattage rating:
      • A 400W system will generate 2000W during one day.
      • A 100W system will generate 500W in the same time frame.
    • Add solar panel units to your system until the number of panels suffices in providing you with enough Watts to last you a day. If you need 5000Watts-hour/day (according to your calculations above), you’ll need 10x100W panels to power all your appliances, based on 5 hours of sunlight.

    If you don’t have enough roof space or if it becomes too costly, you’ll need to limit usage of some appliances and recalculate what you need.

    How Much Will an RV Solar Kit Cost?

    And that brings us to the next question: How much should you budget?

    Of course, suppliers’ prices different, and don’t simply pick the cheapest option you find:

    • Are you buying quality products?
    • Do you get modern benefits like flexible panels?
    • What is included in the kit? If you have to purchase an inverter or controller separately it may work out even pricier than a higher priced kit.

    A decently priced kit, which includes a controller and inverter, can cost around $900. However, you’ll find them priced from $400 to $ 4000, depending on size, brand and other features.

    FAQ of RV Solar Panels

    Can you run your air conditioner off camping solar panels?

    In short, you can run almost any electrical device off your RV solar system. That means you can power up your AC too. The real question is how long your power will last and how much space you have for panels.

    Here’s the unfortunate truth: You may run out of RV roof space before you have enough panels to power your air conditioning unit. Chances are if you want to power up this system you also have a refrigerator and many other appliances to ensure luxury camping. On average these will all require +/- 7?000W.

    Your air conditioner alone may require an additional 14?000W. It’s simply not viable or practical to power your AC this way. What’s your alternative? You should consider using campsite grids for this aspect of RV camping.

    So suggest not run the AC by solar if it’s limited space for solar panels.

    What do these terms mean?

    • Sine wave: An ideal waveform for transferring AC power. This is used to refer to the voltage which your DC power battery or the solar panel transmits via an inverter in order to generate AC voltage.
    • Panel types: As technology developed solar panels’ designs changed. Now you get two main types called polycrystalline and monocrystalline. The latter is more efficient, but also pricier. Costing makes polycrystalline units the most popular. A third option is flexible solar cells that allow you to use panels in unique setups such as placing them directly onto an RV roof for a motorhome solar system. This means less wind resistance when you drive your RV to the camping site.

    What do Watts, Amps, and Volts Have to Do With RV Solar Camping?

    • Watts (W): The measure of power or at what rate the power gets consumed.
    • Amps (A): Rate at which the electric charge flows.
    • Volts (V): The electrical potential of the measure of push.

    To put these together in an equation may explain their relation to each other:

    Volts x Amps = Watts

    In practice you need to think about it this way:

    • Hooking up an appliance with a 60W rating to a 12V system means it will draw 5A.
    • The same appliance connected to a 24V system will draw 2.5A according to the equation.
